Ogbourne Primary School is a Church of England school and it is our intent for our Religious Education curriculum to help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain. We want to engage, inspire, challenge and encourage pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to answer challenging questions, explore different religious beliefs, values and traditions and develop a more rigorous understanding of the numerous religious traditions, beliefs and practices that are followed in our multi-cultural society. Our curriculum promotes respect and open-mindedness towards others with different faiths and beliefs and encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging through self-awareness and reflection. The manner in which we teach Religious Education reflects our values, which are Love, Friendship, Integrity, Respect, Effort, Hope and along with all other curriculum areas, particularly PSHCE, promotes the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of our children.

Our R.E. Implementation - 2022-23
We follow the Wiltshire Agreed Syllabus for RE, using both Discovery RE (for other World Religions) and Understanding Christianity (for Christianity) to deliver the Syllabus. An enquiry-based approach to teaching and learning is used in RE at Ogbourne C of E Primary School. Each “Discovery RE” unit begins with a “Big Question”, and each “Understanding Christianity” unit begins with an experiential stimulus, which the children can instantly engage with, regardless of their own beliefs and world views. Throughout the course of the “Discovery” unit, an enquiry takes place as a class to explore the “Big Question” and art, music, discussion, dance and drama are also used to help the children explore, build knowledge and understanding and then reflect on the subject of the enquiry. This style of learning is also followed in our “Understanding Christianity” work. RE is taught once a week; however three times a year, the whole school comes together to celebrate world religions.
Our R.E. Impact - 2022-23
The children at Ogbourne C of E Primary School enjoy learning about other religions and why people choose, or choose not to follow a religion; they understand that everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and that it is important to welcome and celebrate our differences and to be tolerant of one another. Through their R.E. learning, the children are able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and in the wider world, developing an understanding of other people’s cultures and ways of life. They are able to readily engage with a range of ultimate questions about the meaning and significance of existence and can ask significant and reflective questions about religion.
We hope for our children to leave primary school ready for the rest of their education with an open mind and an awareness of society’s diversity and be role models to other students in how to tolerate and appreciate our differences. Above all else, we believe this curriculum provides our children with the skills, knowledge and understanding to make a positive contribution to modern British society as they mature.
